Tyre & Air-Down Guide for SA Terrain
Tyres are your only contact with the ground. Getting tyre choice and pressure right makes more difference than most mods.
## Popular SA 4x4 Tyres
All-Terrain (AT) — most versatile for SA
- BF Goodrich KO2 — proven, expensive, worth it
- Yokohama Geolandar AT — good value, quiet on tar
- General Grabber AT3 — underrated, solid performer
- Falken Wildpeak AT3W — excellent wet performance
Mud Terrain (MT) — for serious mud and rock
- BF Goodrich KM3 — aggressive, loud on tar
- Maxxis Trepador / Razr MT — good grip, harder to balance
- Mickey Thompson Baja Boss MT — popular in rock-crawling circles
Highway Terrain (HT) — for mostly tar with occasional gravel
- Fine for Gauteng day trips, not for real bush
## Air-Down Guide
Reducing tyre pressure increases the tyre's contact patch, improving traction and reducing the risk of getting stuck.
How to air down:
- Use a reliable pressure gauge (don't trust dashboard readings)
- Deflate slowly — 5 PSI at a time, check and reassess
- Carry a portable compressor (ARB, Bushranger, or similar) — you must be able to re-inflate before tar
Recovery from air-down failure:
- If a tyre unseats from the rim in sand, don't panic — use a ratchet strap around the tyre to reseat it, then re-inflate carefully
