Running OME BP-51s on my D4D Hilux and the difference on the corrugated roads between Tshipise and Mapungubwe is night and day. Stock shocks were boiling hot and wallowing all over the shop. BP-51s stay cool and planted. Spent a bit more but my back thanks me every trip. Lekker product, ARB support in SA is also solid.
I went with Dobinsons MRR on my Ranger and couldn't be happier. Did the Baviaanskloof in June — some really technical rocky sections — and the shocks handled everything without complaint. The remote reservoir makes a real difference on sustained off-road sections. Castor correction camber bolts are a must after lifting though, learned that the hard way with uneven front tyre wear.
Quick tip for budget builds: SuperPro poly bushes throughout the suspension before you do anything else. They make a massive difference on worn-out SA roads and cost a fraction of a full shock upgrade. Do those first, then save for decent dampers. Also seconding the castor correction advice — it's non-negotiable after a 40 mm lift.
One thing the post doesn't mention — extended brake lines. If you're lifting significantly and adding more articulation, factory brake lines can bind or snap at full droop. I fit braided stainless lines at the same time as the lift. Cheap insurance. A snap on a mountain pass is not the time to learn this lesson!
For Cederberg specifically I'd say spring rate matters as much as shock quality. Too soft and you're smashing your bump stops on the rocky descents. I run a slightly higher spring rate than the OME catalogue suggests for my weight class — gives a firmer ride on tar but eliminates the worst bottom-outs on trail.
