Before you buy a lift kit, lockers, or a fancy winch, learn to manage your tyre pressure. It's free, it's instant, and it makes a bigger difference on most terrain than almost any other modification. South Africa's diverse terrain — from coastal dune fields to rocky mountain passes to wet KZN mud — each demands a different approach. This guide cuts through the confusion.
## The Basics: What Happens When You Air Down
Lowering tyre pressure increases the contact patch — the footprint of rubber touching the ground. More contact means:
- Better floatation on sand (vehicle sits on top rather than sinking in)
- Greater grip on rock (tyre wraps around the surface instead of perching on a point)
- Improved traction in mud (tyre deforms and clears mud more effectively)
The trade-off: lower pressure increases the risk of bead unseating and punctures on sharp terrain, and ruins fuel economy and handling on tar. Always re-inflate before returning to tar roads.
## Recommended Pressure Ranges by Terrain
### Sand (Coastal Dunes, Kalahari, Namib)
- Recommended: 0.8–1.2 bar (12–18 psi)
- For soft coastal dunes like Atlantis Dunes near Cape Town or De Hoop: go as low as 0.8 bar
- Wider, lower-profile tyres can go lower; narrow AT tyres may unseat below 1.0 bar
- Always air down before you reach soft sand — not after you're already stuck
### Rock (Cederberg, Drakensberg Foothills, Sani Pass, Blouberg)
- Recommended: 1.4–1.8 bar (20–26 psi)
- Keep pressure moderate — you want sidewall flex to grip rocky surfaces without risking a pinch flat
- Avoid going too low on sharp quartzite or sandstone; sidewall damage is the primary risk
- Inspect tyres at every stop
### Mud (Limpopo Lowveld, Eastern Escarpment, Tzaneen Area)
- Recommended: 1.2–1.5 bar (17–22 psi)
- Mud tyres (MT) can go lower; AT tyres benefit less from airing down in mud
- Focus on momentum and tyre choice more than extreme pressure reduction
- Sticky black cotton soil in KZN and Limpopo is notoriously unforgiving

Atlantis Dunes humbled me badly before I learned to air down properly. Arrived in my stock Fortuner at full pressure, sank up to the axles in the first soft bowl, spent two hours getting sorted. Next trip I aired to 0.9 bar before the dunes — sailed through everything. A compressor and tyre deflators are now the first thing I pack. Don't learn the hard way like I did!
On rock I keep it around 1.6 bar for my KO2s. Going lower feels intuitive but the pinch flat risk on sharp Cederberg sandstone is real. Had a mate lose two tyres in one day at 1.2 bar on a particularly jagged section near Algeria campsite. The sidewall gets squeezed between the rim and a rock edge — very expensive lesson.
The corrugated gravel tip is one people often miss. Most guys air down for gravel thinking it helps, but on fast corrugated roads — like the road into Tswalu or heading to the Botswana border — slightly higher pressure reduces the harmonics and actually rides better. You can feel the difference immediately. Also reduces tyre heat buildup on long runs.
Invest in a good compressor. I used a cheap Chinese unit for years — it died halfway through airing up after a dune run near Bela-Bela. Sitting on the side of the road with four soft tyres and a dead compressor is not lekker. ARB Twin has been bulletproof for me since. Also carry a pressure gauge that you've verified against a known reference — cheap gauges lie.
