KZN trails combine coastal, bush, and Drakensberg terrain — extremely varied and often challenging.
Notable Routes
Sani Pass — The big one. SA side is steep 4x4 track into Lesotho. Sani Top is the highest pub in Africa. Compulsory for any KZN 4x4er.
St Lucia Wetlands Roads — Beach driving north of St Lucia (permit required). Turtles nesting in season. Epic sunrise drives.
Itala — Doringhoek Trail — Game reserve 4x4 trail. Self-guided, rewarding.
Drakensberg escarpment tracks — Numerous forestry and farm roads on the escarpment. Many require permits from Ezemvelo.
Ndumo–Tembe area roads — Remote northern KZN near Mozambique border. Serious sandy tracks, dense bush, malaria area.
