The Drakensberg has had me chasing it for 15 years and I still haven't done everything on my list. Quick tip for the northern Berg: the Sentinel car park (for the Chain Ladders route) fills up fast on weekends. Arrive by 06h30 or you'll be parking on the road 2 km back and adding to your day. The sunrise on the Amphitheatre from the top of the Chain Ladders is worth the early alarm, trust me.
Lightning is genuinely serious up here — not something to take lightly. I was caught on the plateau above Giants Castle in a summer storm in January and the hair-standing-up feeling on my arms was terrifying. Since then I'm always off the high ground by 12h30 on any summer hike. The rule of thumb in the Berg: if you're not at your lunch spot by noon, you're behind schedule on a summer day.
The San rock art at Bushmens River Cave near Giants Castle is genuinely one of the most moving cultural experiences in South Africa. The guide (SANParks provides one) explains the spiritual significance and you start to see the images completely differently. Budget half a day for this easy 5 km return walk — it should be on every South African's bucket list, hiker or not.
Giants Cup Trail is the ideal first multi-day Drakensberg hike — well-marked, huts provided, not too technical. Did it with my wife in April and the autumn colours in the valleys were stunning. Five days flies by. Book early through KZN Wildlife — it is popular and the huts have limited capacity. Take blister plasters even if you think you won't need them. You will.
