If you're heading out into the Kalahari, the Richtersveld, or even just the Kruger bushveld for a week, a quality 12V compressor fridge is non-negotiable. Warm beer is a crime, and spoiled meat in the veld is a disaster. I've been running various units over the past few years and thought it's time we had a proper thread comparing the three brands most common in SA.
## Brass Monkey (NZ/SA favourite)
- The Brass Monkey 50L retails around R8 500–R9 200 depending on where you buy it
- Compressor cooling with a Samsung/Secop unit — proven and repairable
- Dual-zone models available (fridge + freezer sections)
- Very popular in the SA market, widely stocked at Outdoor Warehouse and Campmaster dealers
- Draws around 1–2A at cruise — excellent for solar setups
- Some users report the lid hinge being a weak point on older models
## Engel (The tank)
- The Engel MT45F-U1 (40L) runs around R12 000–R14 000 in SA
- Uses the famous Swing Motor compressor — nearly bulletproof, handles extreme angles
- Preferred by serious overland guides who can't afford a breakdown
- Heavier than the competition but built like a Unimog
- Parts and service available through authorised SA dealers
## ARB Elements Fridge

## My Verdict
- Budget pick: Brass Monkey — lekker value, easily sourced, spare parts available
- Serious overlander: Engel — spend the extra rands, it will outlast your bakkie
- ARB ecosystem user: ARB Elements — makes sense if you're already running ARB air lockers and accessories

Ja nee, been running my Engel MT45 since 2017 and the thing has not skipped a beat. Took it through Mozambique twice, Botswana three times, and it even survived my son reversing the bakkie into a drainage ditch. The lid cracked but the motor kept going. You pay for quality with Engel, no doubt. My neighbour bought a cheap Chinese unit from a market stall and it lasted one trip to the Drakensberg before the compressor gave in. Buy once, cry once, ouboet.
I've got the Brass Monkey 50L and for the price it's really hard to beat. Bought mine at Outdoor Warehouse for R8 799 last Black Friday. Runs beautifully on my 200W solar panel — barely makes a dent on the battery. One tip: get a proper fridge slide from Front Runner or Drifta, don't just bungee it in the back of your bakkie. Makes a huge difference to the seals long-term.
For anyone considering the ARB — the Bluetooth monitoring is genuinely useful when you're sleeping in a rooftop tent and want to check temps without climbing down at 3am. Also the lid stays shut on serious corrugations, which I cannot say about every fridge I've owned. The price is steep but the ARB resale value is also strong if you ever sell your rig.
Jislaaik, don't sleep on the Dometic CFX3 range either. Yes, it's a bit more coin — the 45L goes for around R16 000 — but the insulation is exceptional and the USB charging ports on the lid have saved my bacon more than once when my phone died in the middle of nowhere near Upington. Each to their own but Dometic deserves a mention in this comparison.
