Sodwana Bay marlin season — which months, boat charter tips
Spent 4 days at this spot last school holidays. Here is the full breakdown.
Target species: marlin (blue and black, November to March), sailfish, dorado, and yellowfin tuna. We focused on the bigger fish and had a solid session.
Tactics that worked: The beach launch at Sodwana is tide and sea-state dependent — swell over 2m makes it dangerous or impossible. Book your charter 3–6 months ahead for peak marlin season. Line class 37kg is the standard here.
Access: iSimangaliso MPA permit required for the marine protected area — buy annually at the post office or monthly at local dive shops.
Accommodation: Camped at the nearest caravan park — R313/night for a powered site. Facilities were better than expected.
Best time to visit: After the first summer rains.
Tip for first-timers: Pre-book your camping — this spot fills up on school holidays.
10/10 destination. Will be back.

The licence situation is important to mention — I have seen conservation officers checking at this dam specifically. The online licence via dffe.gov.za is the easiest option and they accept the digital version on your phone.
Solid report. The catfish after dark is exactly what I have found works at this spot. What line weight are you fishing? I have been using 20lb fluorocarbon and getting results.

9/10 sounds about right based on my experience. The facilities is the weakest part. The fishing makes up for it.
I was there over Easter and the water levels were very different. Best conditions I have seen in 3 years there. Always worth checking conditions before the drive.
