Sardine run 2025 — dates, best viewing spots, what gear to bring
Spent 5 days at this spot last Easter. Here is the full breakdown.
Target species: carp and bream. We focused on the bigger fish and had a surprisingly productive session.
Tactics that worked: Fish late afternoon when the fish move onto the shallows. Use live bait on a float for best results.
Access: Valid freshwater licence required — R62 per season, buy online at dffe.gov.za or at any post office.
Accommodation: Camped at the nearest caravan park — R342/night for a powered site. Facilities were a bit rough around the edges but functional.
Best time to visit: Winter months when the water clears.
Tip for first-timers: Check the dam level before you go — it affects access dramatically.
9/10 destination. Will be back.

10/10 sounds about right based on my experience. The facilities is the weakest part. The fishing makes up for it.
Solid report. The bass on structure is exactly what I have found works at this spot. What line weight are you fishing? I have been using 20lb fluorocarbon and getting results.

The licence situation is important to mention — I have seen conservation officers checking at this dam specifically. The online licence via dffe.gov.za is the easiest option and they accept the digital version on your phone.
I was there in February and the water levels were very different. Best conditions I have seen in 3 years there. Always worth checking conditions before the drive.
Did you get a guide or self-guided? I have been debating hiring someone local who knows the specific hot spots rather than trying to figure it out myself. Is the extra cost worth it or is the fishing good enough to find it yourself?
