Loskop Dam largemouth bass — the story behind the 7.19kg SA record
Spent 4 days at this spot last weekend. Here is the full breakdown.
Target species: largemouth bass (SA record 7.19kg came from here), bluegill, and catfish. We focused on the bigger fish and had an exceptional session.
Tactics that worked: The bass hold tight to the submerged tree lines on the eastern bank. Fish a Texas-rigged soft plastic worked slowly along the bottom structure. Early morning topwater in summer is spectacular.
Access: Day permits at the resort gate. Boat launch available. No private boats over 15HP.
Accommodation: Camped at the nearest caravan park — R292/night for a powered site. Facilities were clean and well-maintained.
Best time to visit: Winter months when the water clears.
Tip for first-timers: Talk to the local tackle shop before you go — they know what is working that week.
10/10 destination. Will be back.

Did you get a guide or self-guided? I have been debating hiring someone local who knows the specific hot spots rather than trying to figure it out myself. Is the extra cost worth it or is the fishing good enough to find it yourself?
What bait or lures were you using for the catfish? I have been struggling to find what works consistently. Boilies in strawberry and banana are killing it lately if that helps.

Solid report. The yellowfish on the fly is exactly what I have found works at this spot. What line weight are you fishing? I have been using 30lb braid to 15lb fluoro leader and getting results.
7/10 sounds about right based on my experience. The camping area is the weakest part. The fishing makes up for it.
