Nampo is absolutely not to be missed. I go every year and spend two full days walking the exhibits. Last May I picked up a deal on an OME suspension kit and a rooftop tent that saved me about 20% compared to retail. The live off-road demo track is also great fun. Pro tip: go on the Thursday — Friday and Saturday are absolutely rammed with people and parking is a nightmare.
African Overlander Festival is where I found my current travel group. Pitched up solo, met three other bakkie owners at the evening braai, and we ended up doing a two-week Botswana run six months later. The community aspect is what makes it special. Events calendar and tickets usually go up around September on their website and social media pages.
The Kalahari 1000 as a spectator event is insane. Drove down from Joburg with a few mates, camped in the Loxton area, and watched vehicles tear across the veld at crazy speeds. The dust plumes you see from kilometers away and then the noise hits you — jislaaik. Even my wife who normally tolerates my 4x4 obsession was completely hooked.
Don't sleep on the Overberg 4x4 Challenge for Western Cape locals. It's a smaller event but the terrain around Bredasdorp and the Agulhas plain is really unique — fynbos trails, coastal dune crossings, and some farm track sections that will test your vehicle. Very well organised by the local 4x4 club and a proper lekker family weekend.
The Outdoor Expo at Gallagher Estate in Joburg is also worth a mention for those who can't make Nampo. It's more focused on camping and hiking than heavy 4x4 stuff but the product range is good. Usually held in July — great timing to finalise your spring trip kit before the September school holidays rush.
